New film production company Nthibah Pictures announced details of its first feature film this week, with news that celebrated director Donovan Marsh is at the helm of the project.
The film, a crime thriller with the working title Valhalla, is currently in pre-production with shooting set to start in late October.
“It is thrilling to have someone of Donovan’s stature involved in our first project. Especially considering the sensitivity and creative approach required to direct a film dealing with what has become a global social issue affecting millions. He is currently in the USA to introduce his latest project Hunter Killer, starring Gerard Butler and Gary Oldman. Our shooting schedule is set to start once he returns late October,” says Wayne Fitzjohn, CEO of Nthibah Pictures, a company founded by investment group Talent10 .
Marsh has an impressive list of completed projects, locally and internationally, under his belt and is very well known locally for the popular and successful Spud and Spud 2: The Madness Continues films as well as the award-winning iNumber Number.
“The feature aims to appeal to local and international audiences and will be shot at two different locations in South Africa. We are in the final stages of selecting what will be an all-star cast of leading South African actors,” Fitzjohn says.
Jozua Malherbe, known for his directing of the feature Wolwedans in die Skemer and the drama series Bloedbroers, and Lucia Meyer-Marais, line producer of Cannes Official Selection Un Certain Regard film Die Stropers (The Harvesters) and co-producer of Donkerland, have been appointed as producers of Valhalla. They are joined by producer Jarrod de Jong, whose most recent projects include Openbarings for VIA tv channel (producer) and the feature film Amandla (producer).
“The South African film industry has an undisputed reputation for excellence at the highest standards. We have put a great team in place with the goal of producing an exceptional film that can compete internationally,” Fitzjohn says.
